Contemporary transformations of national legislation are setting new developmental vectors for criminal law, which directly impact both its scholarship and practice, and this, in turn, necessitates improvements in teaching methodologies for future legal professionals. Associate Professor of the Department of Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement at the Faculty of Law, Olena Sasko, participated in the Professional Development School for Criminal Law Instructors: "Criminal Legislation of Ukraine: Contemporary Challenges and Development Prospects." The event was aimed at supporting the professional development of criminal law educators from higher education institutions and took place under the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine, in cooperation with the Supreme Court and in partnership with the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University (February 8–10, 2026, Kyiv).   The School's work involved judges of the Supreme Court, leading scholars, experienced instructors, and members of the working group developing the new Criminal Code. The School's lecturers presented current concepts of criminal law, shared innovative teaching approaches in wartime conditions, and offered practical advice on improving criminal law teaching methodologies in light of contemporary challenges and development prospects.

The Council of Europe Open Academic Networks (OCEAN) Programme brings together universities, research institutions, and scholars from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe around a shared goal – human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The OCEAN Programme is implemented by the Department for the Implementation of Human Rights, Justice and Legal Co-operation Standards. Founded in 2018 by Professor Michele Nicoletti, then President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, OCEAN welcomes both institutional and individual academic members from Council of Europe member states and beyond. The Open Academic Networks of the Council of Europe aim to facilitate the exchange and creation of knowledge regarding over 200 Council of Europe conventions in cooperation with European universities through teaching, research, and academic activities. OCEAN provides a platform that brings together universities, research institutions, and individual scholars working on Council of Europe conventions of their choice or other topics related to the work and mission of the Council of Europe. It serves as a source of information on Council of Europe activities, promotes the dissemination of best practices and research, connects its members with the Council of Europe and its expert groups, and offers its members opportunities to participate in events organised by OCEAN in Strasbourg or its member states, either online or in person. Institutional members are encouraged to organise at least one academic event per year, such as seminars, conferences, summer or winter schools, in the aforementioned fields. Individual members are requested to play a leading role in organising the aforementioned events or to publish (an article, book, or chapter) on any of the Council of Europe conventions or other aspects of its mission.

The lecturer is Eric Putzig, Honorary Doctor of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University and President of the American non-profit organization "Build Ukraine Democracy." For over two years, Erik Putzig has been working on a volunteer basis, applying his 25 years of experience in implementing US government projects in countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, East Timor, Cambodia, and others. The "Democracy" course is an introductory interdisciplinary programme covering aspects of law, politics, history, philosophy, and the arts. It will be of interest to students from all faculties and at all educational levels (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD). REGISTRATION is available via the link: https://www.buildukrainedemocracy.com/registration Registration deadline: March 15 The course includes: 20 hours of video lectures in English with Ukrainian subtitles; 10 hours of practical sessions (lecture materials, exercises, case studies); 658 animated PowerPoint slides; Midterm and final exams. Participation in the course is free of charge for students and universities. Upon completion of the course, students receive certificates for 3 ECTS credits, featuring the logos of all participating universities. Teachers are also welcome to participate, with the opportunity for professional development and to receive a certificate.
